How will Brexit affect the film and TV industry both in the UK and abroad? The eyes of the world are now on the UK Parliament as it tries to wade through the tangled web known as Brexit. In 2016, the United Kingdom held a referendum to decide whether to remain in the European Union or leave, with 52% voting for the latter option. For the past 3 years, the United Kingdom has been trying to implement this decision, but since the vote, all the consequences and complications of Brexit have come to the fore, and the process has proven impossible for several prime ministers.
Adding to the political turmoil, it also emerged that the Leave campaign had made a number of dishonest claims before the 2016 referendum, and their data collection behavior was investigated in Brexit: The Uncivil War, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and in the Netflix movie The Great Hack. On the other side of the coin, Remain MPs have been criticized for being more vocal about what they don’t want than what they are willing to accept.
The main problem with Brexit is that, even if we ignore the controversy surrounding the 2016 vote, there is no clear consensus on what type of Brexit the public or parliament wants, as there are many very different options on the table. Currently, the UK government is pursuing a no-deal Brexit, and politicians are fighting to prevent this outcome. Experts predict that if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, the country will be left with a shortage of fresh food, no access to medicines, and a ruined economy.
